Club Event 15th August 2010
During the early evening of the club event at Westbury I gave Ian Carter a quick and a brief telephone interview (chat really). He emailed me later and thanked me for the call tonight. He was very pleased that his find has won a prize; his FIRST since joining the club.
He explained that he had taken photos of both the coin and annular brooch. Both will be given to Katy (PAS) and he will email her in case she is not at the next club meeting. He apologised the photos are not brilliant as he does not have good lighting in the home office. I thought they were great in the circumstances, and the idea of the graph paper background with scale provides the viewer with a good clear idea of the size of both the coin and brooch; this is so often missing when you look at objects in popular magazines.
The brooch is probably medieval but he would like a proper assessment of period.
The coin is a Mary Tudor Groat and apparently quite scarce? The date is possibly 1553-54. This is only the second hammered coin he has found since joining the club; so well done.

What machine and settings was he using?
Ian is using a Minelab Quattro with SEF 10 x 12" coil. It is run in coin/jewellery mode with discrimination levels -5 to -10 blanked. Both objects were no more than 6" deep. He could not remember the tone number for either object, however he thought the coin was about 18-20.
He then thanked me for arranging this event another successful day.
